Hi, I’m Kate Strand from the Vitals.

http://www.facebook.com/TheVitalsmusic

The records that I have been listening to most recently are:

Fugazi – Repeater (Dischord)

Image

Dot Hacker – Inhibition (ORG Music)

Image

Mark Lanegan Band – Blues Funeral (4AD)

Image

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Show Your Bones (Interscope)

Image

Radiohead – Hail To The Thief (Parlophone)

Image

I listen to them in my studio apartment in Hollywood on a cheap Crosley CR49-TAthat I bought years ago.

Image

It resembles a suitcase, I bought it primarily because of that…and because I could afford it. It has dug itself a special place in my heart. The day I switch to what you might call a “better” player will be bitter sweet. All of the those records are albums I have listened to religiously over the years, give or take, on Cassette and or CD. Listening, enjoying and studying them in their vinyl form has been a brand new experience.

They create a tangible experience in my small space. Holding them in my hands, studying the art, carefully placing the vinyl on the player, putting them back to sleep in their paper sleeves.…it’s all part of the experience.

Live on vinyl.

Hey Matt,

I’ve been using a Gemini XL-500 turntable for the last 13 years.

Image

I purchased it in ’99 when my passion for vinyl peaked. I have many record players but this is my main one.  I’m a fan of Grado cartridges and I’m currently using a Gold Prestige.

Image

Some records in regular rotation on my turntable of late…

ULVER “Childhood’s End” 2xLP (Jester Records) …the ever evolving Norwegian group who’s earliest output was raw and blistering Black Metal in it’s purest form.  Their latest project is a covers record of classic psych/garage bands…Pretty Things, Gandalf, 13 Floor Elevators, Music Emporium etc.

Image

JK FLESH “Posthuman” 2xLP (3by3 Records) …the closet sound to Godflesh since their demise.  I hear all of Justin Broadrick’s project in JK Flesh.  Certainly the beats and almost dub step sound of Palesketcher accompanied by the atmosphere of Jesu and crushing guitars of Godflesh.  This album is brilliant!

Image

Symmetry “Themes For An Imaginary Film” 3xLP (Italians Do It Better) …originally commissioned to be the soundtrack to the movie ‘Drive’ this synth drone/jam masterpiece was years in the making, brought to you by the genius’ behind Chromatics & Glass Candy.

Image

Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats “Blood Lust” LP (Rise Above) …continually churning out some of the dirtiest rock in the land, Rise Above released this modern masterpiece of Stoner Rock Doom that reminds us why the blueprint for hard rock will always remain in the early 70’s bands that molded the sound.
for fans of Sabbath, Pentagram, Blue Cheer to more obscure bands like Wicked Lady, Granicus and modern bands Graveyard & Witch.

High On Fire, – De Vermis Mysteriis (Relapse)

Image

Sleep – Dopesmoker Re-issue (Southern Lord)

My Cat Is An Alien – mixed

and a lot of strange stuff from Finland.

Grady Runyan’s (Owner of Grady’s Record Refuge in Ventura) choice of TT + some great recommendations

At home I use a JVC QL-7 as my main turntable.

Image

It’s a no frills, fully manual, direct drive turntable.  Always been super reliable and never had any issues with it.  I’ve had it for about 10 years now, and have put an incredible amount of hours on it.  I usually use a Shure V-15 type III cart with it.  Want to get a shout out to K.C. Staples (of Record Outlet in Thousand Oaks 🙂 for selling me this great turntable!

Here are some records I’ve been jamming on it lately:

Taste – s/t.  Rory Gallagher’s first band.  Rocks.
Image

Jim Sullivan – UFO.  Great reissue on Light In The Attic, Jim’s back story is pretty bizarre.

Image

Wild Tchoupitoulas – s/t.  Awesome New Orleans funk featuring the Meters.

Image

Redd Kross – Researching the Blues.  One of my favorite bands from the 80’s, new album is excellent!

Image

Dick Hyman – The Age of Electronicus.  One of the weirder Moog LPs (and there’s a lot of weird Moog LPs).

Image

Lawndale – Sasquatch Rock.  Somehow overlooked these guys back in the day, now they’re my favorite surf band.

Image

Yusef Lateef – The Blue Yusef Lateef.  Adventurous and hard to describe, like hearing a new language.

Image

Cave – Pure Moods.  These guys played my store a couple years ago and blew me away, and this record is even better!

Marcus Blake’s (Bassist for Self, Mother Superior, Rollins Band) Sexy Rega RP3 and LP recommendations

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on 08/29/2012 by Shattered Platter
My turntable of choice is a Rega RP3.  Henry Rollins turned me on to the great Rega line of turntables a few years back.  I am a big fan of vinyl and there’s nothing like hearing an original U.K. copy of The Beatles’ Revolver in mono on that baby!  What warmth! What tone!

Image

I love cds if mastered properly too but, man, there’s nothing like checking out a classic album on vinyl on a good turntable with good speakers to boot!

I got lucky recently and scored something like 30 records in amazing condition at the local Goodwill!  Everything from Jeff Lynne’s pre-Move band, The Idle Race to Zeppelin, to Kate Bush to Jobriath to Queen to Springsteen and Roxy Music bootlegs to Cheech & Chong albums was in that stash!  Who the hell gives away Jobriath albums to Goodwill anyway?  Haha!  There was about 30 records total.  Prince’s Around The World In A Day and Otis Redding’s Dictionary Of Soul album (original mono on Stax) were recently played on my Rega RP3.

Image

Image

I must also mention EMI’s recent reissue of David Bowie’s classic The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars on vinyl is a revelation!  It was mastered by the original mastering engineer, Ray Staff and sounds better than ever.  It also has a DVD of the album and outtakes with a 5.1 mix done by producer, Ken Scott.  Recommended!

Image

I am aiming to put out my own album, Distorted Hymns, on vinyl in the near future and I can’t wait to put it on my Rega RP3 and crank it!

Cheers,
Marcus Blake
